Start at the End

It’s my turn.

Well, I guess we all have to turn fifty at some point and much to my amazement, my turn is only a few short months away.  Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not really having any trouble with the BIG five-oh. At least not on most days.  I have been, however, on the lookout for a BIG idea to mark the BIG event.  Yes – there will be a party (and you’re all invited!) and yes – there will be lots of special times with friends and family.  But that didn’t feel like it was enough.  I’ve had 50 glorious years and it was time for me to say Why Not! to something equally as glorious. Good news, Bad news

Let’s start with the good news.  Recent research shows that, contrary to popular belief, our brain cells do not necessarily die off as we get older.  In fact, certain groups of neurons can actually increase in number and strength as we age.

Phew.  For someone about to hit the big five-oh in a few months this is very good news. (more…)

Google This!

I love Fast Company’s annual 50 Most Innovative Companies edition and I always devour it cover to cover. This year’s magazine, however, had an added bonus.  Right there on the cover, highlighted in a bright red circle, was the following headline.

Things are only impossible until they’re not!

They placed the odds at 480 to 1.

THIS is absolutely brilliant!

THIS is round.

THIS is made out of wood.

THIS is about the size of a looney.

And THIS is absolutely brilliant.

THIS is my friend Voyageur Bob’s new business card. (more…)

Innovation in 30 minutes a week!

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Is this too much to ask?

30 minutes a week.

That’s it.

30 minutes a week.

But here’s the question.

Is 30 minutes a week too much to ask?

“30 minutes a week to do what?” you ask.

30 minutes a week to THINK.

Really THINK.

You see, it seems to me that what we often refer to as THINKING is simply the rearrangement of pre-existing ideas and perceptions. (more…)

A missed idea is a missed opportunity!

I finally did it.

I mean, I knew I had to do it – eventually. Things couldn’t go on as they were any longer. But it seemed like such a daunting task. And just between you and me, I was pretty comfortable with the way things were. I guess that’s why every time I thought of tackling the problem, I convinced myself that it wasn’t the right time – yet. (more…)

Are you ready to fall?

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Are you ready to fall?

Imagine…

You are standing high above the crowd,
balanced on a narrow beam.

As long as you don’t move, you are safe – securely attached to what you know to be true  – to what feels solid and right – to the way things have always been.

But out there…in what appears to be emptiness… could there be something else? Something different?  Something new? (more…)
